It all started with a wish...

Amid the NDIS acquiring legislation in 2013, WISH’s director and CEO Alex was already deeply involved in Physically Challenged Action Foundation – Offinso (PCAF), a nonprofit organisation helping African children with disabilities in need of food, clothing and schooling opportunities. Helping people in need has always been Alex’s passion in life, and when the NDIS commenced, Alex transitioned into the industry with a burning desire to make positive change and give a voice to the voiceless.

How did you start WISH?

"WISH was born from my experience working for several large NDIS companies. I often noticed clients missing out on general aspects of life, like haircuts! For many of them, getting a haircut can be quite stressful, but I just had a knack for calming them so I could cut their hair. And I was pretty good at it! They even started looking forward to when it was time for a fresh cut.

So, I went and studied hairdressing, started a mobile hairdressing company called Unity CutsTM and worked alongside various NDIS companies travelling to individual homes, group homes and aged care facilities offering haircuts to people confined to their homes due to disability or personal circumstance. During the height of COVID-19, I saw many people isolated from their loved ones and something as simple as a haircut brought so much joy to their lives. Clients and their loved ones began asking us if we had more services to offer other than hairdressing, and WISH grew from that.

What makes WISH different to other companies in NDIS?

"Depending on the company, some hierarchies lose that sense of care because, sometimes, there’s just too much for them to focus on. That’s why I designed WISH to have a specific core team around each and every one of our clients at all times, to ensure they receive the highest possible level of care to allow them to learn and grow safely."

How can WISH change the industry for the better?

"By being honest, transparent, and not losing the core focus of why WISH was founded; to provide the best absolute care for each and every one of our clients. Myself and my team are all working with the highest level of passion and integrity to connect with each of our clients and pinpoint their needs, help them map out goals and strive every day to achieve them. We also always maintain clear and constant communication with our clients’ families on their progress and achievements.

And in a changing industry, it’s important for us at WISH to be staying up to date with evolving industry requirements and legislation so we can maintain that high level of care."

What gets you out of bed and to work at WISH every day?

"Definitely the changes we see in our clients. That always inspires us to keep going. Knowing that we’re making changes, changes that we can actually see in our clients, is everything to us. And when our clients’ families see them too, it gives them reassurance and peace of mind. That always fills us with immense pride and gratitude.

I believe giving back is so important because it makes you feel grateful for the life you have. I’ve always felt my purpose in this life has been to give back and spread positive change. And that’s what we at WISH will always endeavour to do."
